Cape Winelands
South Africa
Just over an hour drive from Cape Town and the vineyards of the Cape start to dominate the landscape. Spectacular wineries are everywhere producing their own special wines – red, white and rose – and a wine tasting and tour are a must for every visitor.
It’s quite possible to make a quick spin on a day’s excursion from Cape Town but you would only visit the tourist hub of Stellenbosch. If you love wine or are simply interested in learning more and particularly if you enjoy good food, then a few days in Franschhoek – the gastronomic and culinary capital of South Africa are a must.
This small narrow valley was first settled by the Hugenots in the late 17th Century and their memorial still dominates the main street of the village. Here in less than half a mile you will find five of the worlds top 50 restaurants according to Conde Nast magazine and all at prices around half of those in London – a three course meal with a different wine with each course costs around £25 a head at Reuben’s.
The spectacular backdrop of the spiky granite hills blends with vines of the valley floor to provide a relaxing environment – this is chill zone par excellence. We have a gay owned and operated guest house just a few minutes walk from the main street or why not treat yourself at our 5 star Le Franschhoek resort hotel.
