Prague
Czech Republic
The beautiful Czech capital of Prague is well known for its fabulous architecture and perfectly preserved medieval centre. It has recently developed one of the most vibrant and accessible gay scenes in Europe with a large array of bars, clubs and saunas. After more than 40 years stuck under the grip of the Communist party, the Czechs are enjoying their new found liberty with gusto, with even the Czech parliament recently approving same-sex partnerships.
There are around 30 gay venues in the city, mainly clustered around the pretty residential area of Vinohrady, just outside the historical centre. Bars predominate but there are also a couple of discos, including the superclub Valentino, a leather bar, a bear bar, sex clubs, a couple of strips joints and three saunas. There is no one exclusive Lesbian bar but most clubs are welcoming to girls and many have Lesbian only nights.
Prague is over 1100 years old and its various historical actors have conspired to produce some of the most stunning architecture and compelling tourist sights in Europe. These factors plus a growing nightlife, culinary scene and its easy accessibility have combined to make it one of the most popular destinations for a short break in Europe. But that is not all – the Czech Republic is a fascinating and beautiful country and its small towns and historical centres make a venture outside the capital well worth while. The towns of Cesky Krumlov and Karlovy Vary and the castles at Karlstejn and Konopiste are particularly to be recommended.
The main sightseeing areas of Prague are separated by the Vltava River. On the left bank there is the Prague Castle area and Lesser Town. The right bank is home to the Old Town, the Jewish Quarter, and the New Town. Spanning the Vltava River and connecting the Old Town and Lesser Town is the beautiful Charles Bridge.
