Hong Kong
China
We often wonder why Hong Kong does not market itself as The Land of Contrasts. We spent 8 days there a few years back and felt we had hardly scratched the surface of the many things to see and do. With the growing acceptance of our community, new bars are appearing - try Spin on Hollywood Road - and numerous clubs and restaurants; we feel Hong Kong is a seriously under-rated gay destination.
The popular conception of a small strip of land over come with tall sky-scrapers, huddled together as if for company, is in complete contrast to the superb beaches at Clearwater Bay or the gay one at Middle Bay on Central, the nature reserves of My Lai close to the Chinese border, the Big Buddha statute at Po Lin or the glorious countryside walks of Sai Kung.
For a mix of cultures and history, Hong Kong is also hard to beat anywhere. Here you have far eastern cultures and the Buddhist Religion nestling happily alongside high western cultures of fashion shopping, high finance and big business, all surrounding one of the most beautiful Anglican Cathedrals in the world.
