When you fly into Cape Town no photograph can prepare you for the amazing twin sights of Robben Island and Table Mountain. One a symbol of repression yet ultimately hope, the other an amazing geological feat – both are must sees during your stay in Cape Town.
Gay Cape Town centres on the gay village along Der Waterkant not to be confused with the V & A Waterfront about 15 minutes walk away. The village evokes memories of other gay villages before they were hijacked by the straight party crowd and became trendy.
Along Dixon and Napier streets you’ll find gay bars, clubs, shops, cafes and restaurants which are still owned by gays and whose clientele are still very largely gay and where a heterosexual couple waking hand in hand is a rare sight.
Whilst this may be Cape Town’s gay night life, the day life focuses on the spectacular Clifton No3 beach – a ten minute bus or taxi ride away. Attitude is pretty well non existent here - the beautiful strut their stuff to be admired by the – well-less beautiful. For those who wish to bare all, Sandy Bay a further ten minutes away is the place to go.
And for those cooler days, Sea Point's Palladium Pool is the place to go to tan, swim in warmed waters and mix with the locals. Or you can just hang out on the sundeck or around the pool where you are staying. Few return without a gorgeous tan.
Gay Cape Towners like to think of their city as the 2nd largest Gay Capital in the World and the No 1 Value for Money destination. With the current great rate of exchange, prices are surprisingly low once there with eating and drinking in Der Waterkant around half the price of London's Old Compton Street or Manchester's Canal Street.
Having travelled such a long way, it is a pity not to see more of South Africa and we can also arrange some interesting holiday excursions to explore more of South Africa. It's just a 50 mile spectacular journey to the Cape of Good Hope or why not explore the Cape Winelands and Gay Franchoek, or The Garden Route and Gay Knysna, home of the Pink Loerie Mardi Gras. Of course, the Game Lodge experience in the bush looking for the Big Five is also possible at Madikwe.
