This well-known and popular Spanish family resort never fails to amaze us as to how gay friendly and welcoming it really is. You only have to stroll around the La Nogalera shopping centre about 10.30 every evening to see all the shutters going up, the rainbow flags and boyz coming out and around 45 gay and lesbian bars opening for the evening and well into the night.
Some of the bars are open during the day but if you’re in a shopping mood there are several boyz and girlz shops including Cosmo in c/Casablanca. And that’s not all, Sauna Miguel is a popular venue frequented by the locals as are many of the clubs and discos.
But you’ll probably want to spend your days on one of the two gay main beaches – after all this is the Costa del Sol and even in December you can spend days on the beach. Posiedon or Beirola on the Playa de Bajondillo to the east of the headland are the easiest to access. Both provide sunbeds, showers and shades and a friendly beachbar plus some interesting people watching.
Other beaches attract their sprinkling of boyz and girlz so stroll eastwards to Los Alamos and La Playa Beach Bar or a little further to the gay naturist beach at the Parador. Take public transport to the west and BenalNatura naturist beach is popular as are the dunes at Cabopino beyond Fuengirola – but easily reached by bus.
Malaga City with its cultural and historical sights is well worth a day out and easily reached by the frequent train service that takes 25 minutes. More widely, Granada, Mijas and Ronda as well as Gibraltar can all be enjoyed on a variety of day excursions.
As a great value destination, Torremolinos offers a lot to the gay and lesbian traveller at a low price. Add in the convenience of direct and frequent daily flights from most UK airports with just a 15 minute frequent train transfer and it is easy to see why Torremolinos is so popular and gay friendly.
