Bodrum may well be known as a family resort but this beautiful resort on Turkey’s Aegean coast also has loads of attractions for the gay and lesbian traveller seeking either a beach and party holiday or a mix of culture and history.
Just over four hours flying time away brings you to a different world. The town is dominated by the Castle of St Peter, preserved since medieval times and is well worth a walk round. Nearby you’ll find Dalyan and the Ancient carvings of Canus and other remains of the Carian civilisation easily explored on a boat trip down the Dalyan River to a beautiful beach.
Bodrum’s whitewashed buildings and houses cascaded in pink bougainvilleas sparkle under the clear blue summer skies and run down the clear blue Aegean Sea. Here you’ll find fantastic beaches, fishing villages and a boat trip along the coast is an essential part of any holiday to explore the coves.
So it’s not surprising that Bodrum attracts a mix of international tourists and Turkish society and that brings the inevitable gay traveller to this beautiful part of the Mediterranean with its liberal and relaxed night life and some of hippest nightclubs you’ll find anywhere.
Whilst no bar or club specifically admits to being gay, all will claim to be gay-friendly. But that doesn’t mean that you won’t bump into gay men everywhere; on the streets, beaches, parks or in bars and clubs where a knowing smile rather gives the game away ! Just don’t expect the in your face gay experience with rainbow flags everywhere of some of the Spanish gay resorts.
Bodrun is for clear blue skies, great beaches and wonderful local fish cuisine with a little history on the side.
Please note that all British Ordinary Passport holders require a tourist visa to enter Turkey which is usually bought on arrival at the airport for around £10 – make sure you carry a £10 note with you.
