Drive around 2 hours east from Rio and you'll find the small peninsula of Buzios – best described as Brazil’s Caribbean island in the sun. Like a many fingered hand floating on the Atlantic Ocean and connected to the rest of Brazil by a thin arm, Buzios has a distinct end of the road feel about it.
Compared with Rio this is a laid back resort area with cobbled streets, no buildings taller than three stories and loads of restaurants serving catch of the day caught fresh that morning. There are no glitzy chain resort style hotels but lots of simple family run pousadas – many offering exceptionally high standards at reasonable prices.
The best way to explore this fascinating 5 mile x 3 area with its 24 beaches varying from small naturist coves to longer wider bays with is by renting a beach buggy. Many of the larger beaches have a selection of bars and restaurants with variety of sports facilities for you to rent or participate including sailing, fishing and scuba diving.
Transfer from either Rio or its airport is easy either by private taxi or shuttle bus and we recommend a minimum five night stay to enjoy all the beaches and restaurants that Buzios has to offer.
