Buenos Aires
Argentina
Buenos Aires is quickly emerging as a new and attractive gay holiday destination for those seeking soemthing a little different. The gay scene merges into the social life with gay bars and shops scattered throughout the city, and of course the clubs are legendary. A gay guide and map is essential with the clubs and disco’s not opening until around midnight. But if walking around seems like too much hard work, remember a cross-town taxi ride costs less than £5.
With over 5 Argentine pesos to your pound, a three course lunch with excellent local wine costing around £10 in the trendy Puerto Madero barrio of Buenos Aires or 4 star hotel rooms costing around £60 a night including breakfast, it’s hard to find a better value country to visit.
It's a city with a European culture, open and tolerant and reminiscent of many Spanish cities of the late 1970’s. Wide avenues and extensive parks with shady tress give the city a greenness and space which enables its trade mark obelisk to be seen from many different vantages. And around virtually every corner lies an architectural gem be it a church, sculpture, monument or museum to explore – as our guide told us “we have had a lot of political change to commemorate!”
And don’t forget the regeneration of the old Puerto Madero docks, built by the British in Victorian times which are now packed with fashionable bars, boutiques and restaurants and offer some wonderful dockside walks. Or visit the San Telmo barrio with its bohemian bars cafés and antique shops and threatening to be the next gay neighbourhood to emerge.
A must visit is Evita Peron’s mausoleum in the Crematerio de Recolletas – one of the worlds greatest necropolises and if you’re the footy type the stadium of Boca – the Buenos Aires premiership team. And if all this seems a little daunting, there is always a friendly neighbourhood bar to welcome you with a cooling drink and some local advice.
