Quito
Ecuador
Your main reason for visiting Quito will probably be as starting point for the Galapagos Islands - some 600 miles to the west in the Pacific Ocean. We won't even pretend these are remotely gay but then with some of the mating rituals of the wildlife, you do begin to wonder!
Ecuador or “Equator” in Spanish, decriminalised homosexuality in 2000 and slowly, the gay and lesbian community is emerging from the shadows. Like most capital cities, Quito has a vibrant gay and lesbian scene which at times can be a little difficult to find and the early closing of bars even at weekends can cramp one's style. However, there are two or three gay bars and numerous “gay-friendly” ones.
Lying some 9000 feet up in a valley of the High Andes and surrounded by volcanoes and peaks, Quito is a living monument to the Spanish Colonial era of the 16th – 18th century with many wonderful churches, plazas and examples of Spanish Architecture. It's well worth taking a walking tour and exploring on foot.
About 10 miles to the north lies the Ciudad-Mitad. A small town and attraction developed around the monument to the Equator. Here you can join the throngs having their photo taken with a foot in both the north and south Hemispheres or maybe catch an Ecuadorian pop group performing in the nearby stadium.
