What can be said – you’ll ether love it or hate but either way remember that the island of Gran Canaria really isn’t that gay – it’s just the small tourist town of Playa del Ingles and it’s Yumbo Centre with the nearby dunes at Maspalomas that are the focus of all the attention.
By day the Yumbo is your average Spanish slightly run down concrete shopping centre with possibly rather more boarded up shops than you might expect. By early evening the restaurants are in full swing and there is none of the “can’t eat before 9pm” of many Spanish resorts. Around this time, the boarded up shops mysteriously become gay bars and discos, gay rainbows abound and suddenly there are rather more - well, in fact, a lot more boyz out and about – and all in party mood.
Maspalomas Dunes is easily reached from the centre of Playa del Ingles with the start being around a 20 minute walk away. Whilst the dunes are attractive and attract their fair share of boyz, it’s the beach bar around kiosk no7 where the rainbow flags fly high and proud that most boyz mingle.
If you want a beach by day, clubbing by night holiday than Gran Canaria is just your ticket – restrained it isn’t. And don’t miss Gay Pride week in early May.
