Malaga
Spain
So many visitors to the Costa del Sol simply turn right on leaving Malaga Airport heading for the popular towns of Fuengirola, Marbella and Estepona that they miss out on the coasts most popular gay destinations, the City of Malaga itself. Easily reached by local train from the Airport Station or public bus from outside the Terminal Building
Over the past few years, Malaga has re-invented itself as a trendy and fashionable city with superb shopping along the C/ Marques de Larios and the other pedestrian streets of the Centro Historico. Many fine buildings including the Cathedral and Churches have been restored and there is an air of prosperity particularly evident in the early evenings when the locals take their paseo before going out to dinner.
Much of the gay scene revolves around this area with numerous bars and cafes in the Plaza Merced which are open from early morning until late. As darkness falls the neighbouring streets and alley ways come alive with small bars and discos opening to cater for the gay pleasure seekers.
This area is also a gastronomic delight with numerous small restaurants – many are open all day so it is possible to eat earlier than the traditional 9.30pm of the locals. Our favourite is in the Vino Mio in C/Alamos 11.
And Malaga has some interesting beaches. Around 15 minutes walk from the Centro Historico lies La Malagueta beach with its hammocks and sunshades. The gentle curve of the bay means the sun is available all day and even during the winter months, it’s possible to hang out and catch the rays.
The Gay Costa del Sol of Malaga has changed dramatically in the past five years and now offers a real alternative and better value than Gran Canaria.
