Over the past few years, Malaga has re-invented itself as a trendy and fashionable city with a strong historical and cultural heritage. With direct flights from so many UK airports, it’s ideal for a long weekend city break or longer stay to take advantage of the magnificent Malagueta Beach. Easy transfers by local train from the Airport Station or public bus from outside the Terminal Building to the City Centre make this a highly accessible destination.
The recently opened Carmen Thyssen Museum is a must see as is the Picasso Museum and the Home of his Birth Place is also open to the public. These are just three of Malaga’s twenty museum which range from Wine and Automobiles to Married Life !! Check out the Gibralfaro with its amazing views of the City and as you stroll back down admire the Alcazaba and preserved Roman Amphitheatre before taking a well earned rest in the shady gardens of the English Cemetery. And don’t forget the unusual one towered Cathedral.
Why not get your bearings and discover where all the sights are on our easy ride bicycle tour of the city departing every morning at 10am ? Bikes and all you need are provided and there is a welcome stop in a bodega for a Malaga dulce wine.
Enjoy shopping along the C/ Marques de Larios and the other pedestrian streets of the Centro Historico at prices around 15% cheaper than the UK for brand names such as Masimo Duti, Zara and Desigual. Then join the locals as they take their paseo around the maze of alley ways as they search out a special place for dinner. Many restaurants now open all day so it is possible to eat earlier than the traditional 9.30pm of the locals. And the weekday Menu del Dia offers superb value for the foodie. Try our favourite - the Vino Mio in C/Alamos 11.
Although well integrated, much of the gay scene revolves around the Centro Historico with numerous bars and cafes in the Plaza Merced which are open from early morning until late. As darkness falls the neighbouring streets and alley ways come alive with small bars and discos opening to cater for the gay pleasure seekers.
If as it so often is, a warm sunny day then why not check out the Malagueta beach with its hammocks and sunshades and character beach bars. Just a 15 minutes walk from the Centro Historico, the gentle curve of the bay means the sun is available all day and even during the winter months, it’s possible to hang out and catch the rays.
