New York
USA East Coast
New York New York sang Frank Sinatra and it has to be said that even after 9-11 - it still remains a wonderful place to visit. Whether for a quick weekend, a week or as part of a longer trip to the US, this vibrant city is a must see - at least once in a lifetime!
You'll probably already know the touristy things to do in the "Big Apple" like the Empire State Building, Central Park, Fifth Avenues, Times Square and Broadway Theatre district, Brooklyn Bridge, Guggenheim Museum or Dakota Building where John Lennon and Yoko Ono lived. But you'll also want to see the famous Stonewall Inn - scene of the riots that sparked the Gay Liberation Movement.
Stroll down Christopher Street past the gay owned bars, stores and diners to see George Segal's moving marble memorial in Christopher Park. Walk through Greenwich Village or Chelsea shopping, eating or clubbing, or chill out in the many gay neighbourhood bars that are now everywhere in the City. Explore Little Italy, Canal Street and Chinatown before heading for the Financial District and Wall Street.
And then there is Ground Zero - now a reconstruction site, but visit St Patrick's Episcopalian Church opposite to see where George Washington worshipped and now a moving shrine to the terrorist atrocity.
If you have the time and ever saw the film Longtime Companion you'll want to visit Fire Island - a barrier beach area located about 90 minutes outside of New York City. It is still a premier getaway spot for the gay community. Sand dune beaches rollout into the Atlantic Ocean on the south side of the island, while the north side has dining, bars and clubs.
